Supermetrics vs Looker Studio for Agency Reporting
By Varun, Founder of ReportsMate. Last updated: September 2026.
Most agencies searching "Supermetrics vs Looker Studio" are asking the wrong question, and it costs them money. The two tools are not rivals. Looker Studio (renamed back to Data Studio by Google in April 2026, though everyone still calls it Looker Studio) is a free report canvas. Supermetrics is a paid data pipeline that feeds that canvas, along with Sheets, Excel, Power BI and BigQuery. The realistic choice for an agency is not "one or the other", it is "Looker Studio alone, Looker Studio plus Supermetrics, or a finished-report tool that replaces the whole stack".
This guide answers that version of the question. It covers what Looker Studio gives you for free, exactly what a Supermetrics Looker Studio connector adds, what the combined agency reporting stack costs once you count hours as well as licences, and where the stack breaks down at 20, 50 or 100 clients. We also compare both against the email-first approach we built ReportsMate around, and we disclose that vantage point up front so you can weigh our verdict accordingly.
Key takeaways
- Supermetrics and Looker Studio are different layers of an agency reporting stack: Looker Studio is the free dashboard and report builder, Supermetrics is a paid connector and data pipeline that moves platform data into Looker Studio, Sheets, Excel, Power BI or a warehouse.
- Looker Studio's native Google connectors (GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, BigQuery, Sheets and others) are free. There is no native Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads or TikTok Ads connector, which is the gap Supermetrics and other partner connectors fill.
- Supermetrics lists Starter at $49/mo for 3 data sources, Growth at $199/mo for 7 and Pro at $499/mo for 10, billed monthly, with Looker Studio included as a destination on every plan (as of September 2026).
- Looker Studio itself is free; Looker Studio Pro (now Data Studio Pro) is $9 per user per project per month and lifts the free tier's limit of one scheduled email delivery per report to 200.
- Across ReportsMate's connected client base, GA4 is attached to roughly 7 in 10 clients and Meta Ads to nearly 4 in 10, so Meta is the connector most likely to push a Looker Studio agency into paying for Supermetrics.
- Neither tool solves delivery: a report in Looker Studio is still a report the client has to open. ReportsMate's tracked report emails are opened at a median of about 5 hours after sending, with roughly 3 in 4 opens inside 24 hours.

| Who builds the report | You, per client | You, in whichever destination you choose | The platform, from a standard template |
| Delivery to client | Shared link; scheduled PDF email (1 schedule per report on free) | None; depends on the destination tool | Branded email on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule |
| Narrative / insights | None built in | AI credits for querying data, not client-facing narrative | AI-written plain-English summary in every report |
| White-labelling | Your logo and colours on the canvas; email from Google | Not applicable | Custom domain, sender identity, agency and client logo |
| Ongoing maintenance | High: every dashboard is yours to fix | Medium: connector and schema changes | Low: templates maintained by the vendor |
Pricing was checked on each vendor's public pricing page in September 2026 and all three change plans regularly, so confirm before budgeting. Disclosure: ReportsMate is our product. We have tried to describe Supermetrics and Looker Studio as accurately as we would want a competitor to describe us.
Is Supermetrics vs Looker Studio even a fair comparison?
No. Supermetrics and Looker Studio sit at different layers of the agency reporting stack, and the most common configuration is to use both together. Looker Studio holds the charts; Supermetrics fetches the data the charts draw from.
Here is the mental model we use. A client report has three jobs:
- Get the data out of Google Ads, GA4, Meta, Search Console, Google Business Profile and whatever else the client runs.
- Build the report so the numbers make sense side by side.
- Deliver it in a form the client opens and reads.
Looker Studio does job two well and job three poorly. It does job one only for Google-owned platforms. Supermetrics does job one for hundreds of platforms and does not touch jobs two or three at all. So the honest comparison is between three stacks:
- Looker Studio alone. Free. Works if your clients only run Google products and you are prepared to build and maintain every dashboard yourself.
- Looker Studio plus Supermetrics. Adds non-Google data sources and a more reliable pull than most free community connectors. You still build and deliver everything.
- A finished-report tool. Handles all three jobs. Costs a flat subscription, gives up canvas-level design freedom. This is the category ReportsMate sits in, alongside tools like AgencyAnalytics, DashThis and Whatagraph, which we cover in our Looker Studio alternatives for agencies roundup.
If you have been running the first stack and are wondering whether to move to the second, the rest of this article is written for you.
What does Looker Studio (now Data Studio) give agencies for free?
Looker Studio gives agencies a free, fully customisable report canvas with native connectors to Google's own marketing platforms, one scheduled email delivery per report, and shareable links for client access.
A quick note on the name. Google announced in April 2026 that Looker Studio is reverting to its original name, Data Studio, with Looker Studio Pro becoming Data Studio Pro. Reports, data sources and access carried over unchanged, and the search volume still sits on "Looker Studio", so we use both names in this guide. Google's own documentation now lives under docs.cloud.google.com/data-studio.
What you get at zero cost:
- Native Google connectors. GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, Google Sheets, BigQuery, YouTube Analytics and the rest of the roughly 20 Google-built connectors in the connector gallery. These are free and maintained by Google.
- Unlimited reports and pages. Build as many client dashboards as you want.
- Scheduled delivery. Per Google's schedule automatic report delivery documentation, each report on the free tier can have no more than one schedule, capped at 50 recipients, and you cannot set a custom subject and message on reports in your "Owned by me" folder without upgrading to Pro. The email carries a first-page preview, a PDF attachment and a link back to the live report.
- Sharing. View or edit links, plus embedding.
What Pro adds for $9 per user per project per month, per the Data Studio Pro subscription overview: up to 200 schedules per report, custom subjects and messages, delivery to Google Chat and Slack, team workspaces and Google Cloud support. Note the billing unit. Pro is licensed per user per Google Cloud project, so an agency that isolates each client in its own project pays for each one.
What you do not get, at any tier: a Meta Ads connector, a LinkedIn Ads connector, a TikTok Ads connector, any narrative layer that explains the numbers, or a report that arrives in the client's inbox with your sender identity on it. The scheduled email comes from Google, and every dashboard is a login-required page the client has to choose to visit.
What does the Supermetrics Looker Studio connector actually add?
The Supermetrics Looker Studio connector adds paid, vendor-maintained access to platforms Google does not connect natively, most importantly Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads and TikTok Ads, plus a broader field catalogue and the option to send the same data to Sheets, Excel, Power BI or BigQuery.
Supermetrics restructured its pricing into unified plans that include every destination, so a licence is no longer "Supermetrics for Looker Studio" versus "Supermetrics for Sheets". As listed on the Supermetrics pricing page in September 2026:
| Plan | Monthly price | Data sources | Users | Accounts per source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $49/mo ($39/mo billed annually) | 3 | 1 | 3 |
| Growth | $199/mo ($159/mo billed annually) | 7 | 2 | 7 |
| Pro | $499/mo ($399/mo billed annually) | 10 | 3 | 10 |
| Enterprise | Custom | All | Custom | Custom |
All plans include Looker Studio, Google Sheets, Excel and Power BI as destinations, a 14-day trial with no credit card, and a pool of monthly AI credits for querying data through ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot. Extra users, data sources and accounts can be bought as add-ons.
Two definitions matter here, because they drive the bill. A data source is a platform (Meta Ads, Google Ads, GA4), not a client. An account is one advertiser account inside that platform. So the Starter plan's "3 accounts per data source" means three Meta ad accounts, three Google Ads accounts and three GA4 properties. That is fine for a freelancer with three clients and useless for an agency with thirty, which is why most agencies land on Growth or Pro before they have finished the trial.
What Supermetrics is genuinely good at:
- Breadth. Well over a hundred platforms, including the long tail (Amazon Ads, HubSpot, Shopify, Klaviyo) that finished-report tools rarely touch.
- Depth of fields. More metrics and dimensions per platform than most community connectors expose.
- Warehouse destinations. If you want to own the data model in BigQuery and build blended attribution, this is the pipeline for it.
What it does not do: build the Looker Studio report, write the commentary, or send anything to the client. It is a data layer. If you are evaluating it as a reporting tool, our Supermetrics alternatives for agencies guide compares it against tools that do the whole job.
How much does a Supermetrics plus Looker Studio agency reporting stack really cost?
For a typical agency running Google Ads, GA4, Meta Ads and Search Console across 30 clients, the Supermetrics plus Looker Studio stack costs roughly $200 to $500 per month in licences before you count the hours spent building and maintaining 30 dashboards.
Here is the arithmetic, using the September 2026 list prices above:
- Looker Studio: free. If you want custom email subjects, Chat or Slack delivery, or more than one schedule per report, add Data Studio Pro at $9 per user per project per month. Two users on one project is $18/mo; per-client projects multiply that.
- Supermetrics: four platforms is four data sources, so Starter's three-source cap is already breached. Growth at $199/mo covers 7 sources but only 7 accounts per source, so 30 Google Ads accounts means account add-ons or the Pro plan at $499/mo. Either way, budget $199 to $499 per month plus add-ons.
- Your time: this is the line that dwarfs the licences. Building a solid multi-page Looker Studio report takes hours per client the first time and then a recurring maintenance load when GA4 fields change, a connector re-authorises or a client asks for one more chart. Manual reporting eats 15 or more hours a week at many agencies. At even a modest internal rate, that is thousands of dollars a month in labour sitting behind a "free" tool.
Run your own numbers through our reporting time savings calculator. Most agencies find the labour line is where the real Supermetrics vs Looker Studio decision gets made, not the licence line.
For comparison, ReportsMate's pricing is a flat fee by client count rather than by data source: $29/mo for up to 20 clients, $69/mo for up to 50 and $129/mo for up to 100. No hours building dashboards, because there are no dashboards to build.
Which Looker Studio data sources do agencies actually need?
Most agencies need five Looker Studio data sources: GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads, Google Search Console and Google Business Profile. Three of the five are free natively in Looker Studio; Meta Ads is the one that almost always forces a paid connector.
We can put some first-party numbers on this. Across clients connected to ReportsMate (43 clients, 80 active platform connections, queried this month), the platform mix looks like this:
| Platform | Share of connected clients |
|---|---|
| Google Analytics 4 | Roughly 7 in 10 |
| Meta Ads | Nearly 4 in 10 |
| Google Ads | About 3 in 10 |
| Google Search Console | About 1 in 4 |
| Google Business Profile | About 1 in 4 |
Three things stand out for the Supermetrics vs Looker Studio question:
- GA4 is the anchor. It is the most-connected platform by a distance, and Looker Studio handles it natively and free. If GA4 and Google Ads are all a client runs, Looker Studio alone is a defensible choice.
- Meta is the purchase trigger. Nearly four in ten connected clients have Meta Ads attached. Looker Studio has no native Meta connector, so the moment a Meta client lands, a Looker Studio agency is shopping for a partner connector. Supermetrics is the best-known option; Porter Metrics, Windsor.ai and Dataslayer are the usual alternatives.
- Multi-platform is common, not universal. Just over a third of connected clients (16 of 43) report on two or more platforms in one report, and roughly 1 in 4 (10 of 43) report on four or more. The four-plus group is exactly where the per-data-source pricing model bites hardest, because every extra platform is another counted source.
One reassurance for Looker Studio loyalists: Search Console and Google Business Profile are Google products, so GSC is native and free in Looker Studio. GBP has historically been the awkward one, and a paid connector is often the practical route there too. ReportsMate connects all five, plus LinkedIn Ads and TikTok Ads; see the full integrations list.
Where does the Supermetrics plus Looker Studio stack break down?
The Supermetrics plus Looker Studio stack breaks down at three points: connector and quota fragility, dashboard maintenance that scales linearly with client count, and delivery, because a dashboard nobody logs into is a report nobody read.
Fragility. The native GA4 connector is subject to the Google Analytics Data API quota limits, which surface as broken charts on busy properties or heavily filtered reports. Partner connectors add their own re-authorisation cycles. Every agency running Looker Studio at scale has a Monday-morning ritual of fixing the dashboards that broke over the weekend.
Maintenance. A Looker Studio report is bespoke by design. That freedom is wonderful for the first client and a liability by the twentieth. Each dashboard is a separate artefact to update when a client changes goals, when GA4 renames a field, or when the client asks for a new page. There is no "update the template, all clients get it" lever.
Delivery. This is the one agencies underestimate. We built ReportsMate email-first because, after years around agency reporting, the dashboards clients were handed almost never got logged into. The report that lands in the inbox is the one that gets read. Looker Studio's scheduled email helps, but on the free tier it is one schedule per report, sent from Google rather than your domain, with a PDF that is a picture of a dashboard rather than a narrative. Supermetrics adds nothing here at all.
There is also the narrative gap. Neither tool explains the numbers. Someone on your team still has to write "Meta CPA rose 18% because we paused the retargeting set while the client's stock was out", and that sentence is the part of the report the client actually values. Our post on email reports vs marketing dashboards goes deeper on why the delivery format changes client behaviour.
When is an email-first tool the better agency reporting stack?
An email-first reporting tool is the better agency reporting stack when your goal is to get a finished, branded, explained report in front of every client on a fixed cadence without a human building it, and when your clients run mainstream platforms rather than long-tail data sources.
Two pieces of first-party data shape our view here, both from ReportsMate's production data this month and both aggregated across thousands of sends rather than any individual client.
Reports get opened, and quickly. Of roughly 2,950 tracked report emails, about 29% were opened. Among those opens, the median time from send to open was about 5 hours; roughly 3 in 10 were opened within the first hour and roughly 3 in 4 within 24 hours. The open rate is measured only on sends with tracking enabled, and we do not publish a click rate, but the timing pattern is the point: when the report arrives in the inbox with the agency's sender identity on it, the client reads it the same day.
Agencies pick a cadence and stick to it. Of enabled report schedules, weekly and monthly are tied as the most common reporting cadence, each just over four in ten, with daily at roughly one in seven. Reporting cadence is an insider term worth explaining to clients: it is the fixed rhythm at which they can expect to hear from you, and a consistent cadence is widely linked to stronger client retention because silence is what makes clients start shopping.
The trade-off is design freedom. ReportsMate reports follow a standard structure per platform plus a cross-platform section that blends spend and flags attribution gaps, then an AI layer writes the summary in plain English. You can white-label every element (custom domain, sender identity, your logo, the client's logo), but you cannot drag a chart to a different corner. See how it works for the connect, schedule, send flow. If bespoke per-client layout is a real commercial requirement, Looker Studio remains the right canvas and Supermetrics the right feed.
How should your agency choose?
Choose based on which of the three jobs (get the data, build the report, deliver it) is actually costing you time, and how many clients you expect to have in twelve months.
- Google-only clients, under 10 of them, and a team member who enjoys building: Looker Studio alone. It is free and the maintenance load is manageable at that size.
- Meta, LinkedIn or TikTok in the mix, and you want to stay in Looker Studio: Looker Studio plus a Supermetrics Looker Studio connector (or a cheaper partner connector). Budget from $49/mo for a freelancer to $199 to $499 per month for an agency, and be honest about the account-per-source caps.
- You need raw data in BigQuery for blended modelling or a client's own BI: Supermetrics is the right pipeline, regardless of what you use for the client-facing report.
- Twenty or more clients, mainstream platforms, and the bottleneck is building and sending: a finished-report tool. Compare ReportsMate's email-first model with the dashboard tools before deciding, and check the white-label detail (custom domain, sender identity) if it matters to your positioning.
- A mixed roster: many agencies run two stacks. Finished email reports for the 80% of clients on standard platforms; a hand-built Looker Studio report for the two enterprise accounts with bespoke needs. That is a rational setup, not a failure to decide.
Whatever you pick, decide on delivery first. A report the client never opens returns nothing on the licence or the hours behind it.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Is Supermetrics the same as Looker Studio?
A: No. Looker Studio (renamed Data Studio in April 2026) is Google's free tool for building dashboards and reports. Supermetrics is a paid data connector that moves marketing data from platforms like Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads and TikTok Ads into Looker Studio, Google Sheets, Excel, Power BI or a data warehouse. Agencies typically use them together, with Supermetrics supplying the data Looker Studio charts display. Neither tool delivers a finished, explained report to a client; that is a separate job, and the reason tools like ReportsMate exist. Our ReportsMate vs Supermetrics comparison page sets out the difference in more detail.
Q: Do I need Supermetrics to use Looker Studio?
A: Not if your clients only run Google platforms. Looker Studio connects natively and free to GA4, Google Ads, Search Console, BigQuery, Google Sheets and about 20 Google-built sources in total. You need Supermetrics, or another partner connector such as Porter Metrics, Windsor.ai or Dataslayer, as soon as you want Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads, TikTok Ads or any non-Google platform in the report. In ReportsMate's connected client base, Meta Ads is attached to nearly 4 in 10 clients, so for most agencies the answer becomes "yes" within the first handful of clients.
Q: How much does Supermetrics for Looker Studio cost in 2026?
A: Supermetrics no longer sells a separate Looker Studio licence. Its unified plans, as listed on its pricing page in September 2026, are Starter at $49/mo (3 data sources, 1 user), Growth at $199/mo (7 sources, 2 users) and Pro at $499/mo (10 sources, 3 users), with roughly 20% off for annual billing and Looker Studio included as a destination on every plan. Each plan also caps the number of accounts per data source, which is the limit agencies hit first. Enterprise is custom. Prices move, so confirm on supermetrics.com before budgeting.
Q: Is Looker Studio free for agencies?
A: Yes. Looker Studio, now Data Studio, is free with unlimited reports and native Google connectors. The free tier limits you to one scheduled email delivery per report, sent from Google with no custom subject or message on reports you own. Data Studio Pro costs $9 per user per project per month and lifts that to 200 schedules per report, adds custom messages and Chat or Slack delivery. The real cost of Looker Studio for an agency is the labour of building and maintaining a dashboard per client, which our reporting time savings calculator can help you estimate.
Q: What are the best Looker Studio connectors for agencies?
A: For Google platforms, use the native connectors: GA4, Google Ads and Search Console are free and maintained by Google. For Meta Ads, LinkedIn Ads, TikTok Ads and the long tail, the established partner connectors are Supermetrics (broadest catalogue, highest price), Porter Metrics (agency-friendly pricing and templates), Windsor.ai and Dataslayer. The connector gallery lists several hundred partner connectors and Google prunes it periodically, so check that a connector is actively maintained before building thirty dashboards on it.
Q: Can Looker Studio send reports to clients automatically?
A: Partly. Looker Studio can email a report on a schedule with a PDF attachment, a first-page preview and a link, but the free tier allows only one schedule per report and up to 50 recipients, and the email comes from Google rather than your agency's domain. It does not write any commentary. If automatic, branded, explained delivery is the point, an email-first tool is built for exactly that; ReportsMate sends each client's report from your own sender identity on a daily, weekly or monthly schedule with an AI-written summary at the top.
Q: What is the best Supermetrics and Looker Studio alternative for a small agency?
A: For a small agency whose clients run GA4, Google Ads, Meta, Search Console, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn or TikTok, an email-first tool like ReportsMate replaces both layers for a flat $29/mo to $129/mo depending on client count, with no dashboards to build. If you need long-tail data sources or bespoke per-client layouts, a dashboard tool like AgencyAnalytics, DashThis or Whatagraph, or Looker Studio with a cheaper connector such as Porter Metrics, may fit better. Our Looker Studio alternatives guide, linked above, compares the options side by side.
Stop feeding dashboards nobody opens
Supermetrics vs Looker Studio is a question about plumbing. Looker Studio is a free canvas, Supermetrics is a paid pipe, and together they will get accurate Meta, Google and GA4 numbers onto a page. What they will not do is build that page for thirty clients, keep it working, explain the numbers or make sure the client reads it. Those are the hours your agency is actually spending.
If your roster runs on mainstream platforms and the bottleneck is building and sending rather than modelling raw data, skip the plumbing.
